Building a schedule with a notebook
You do not need software. Take a topic, learn it today, and note four future dates: tomorrow, three days out, a week out, three weeks out. Each visit is short — recall the material from memory, correct what you missed, move on. That is a functioning spaced schedule and it costs you a page.
For a term-long course, the version that works for most people is a rolling list. Each week's new topics get their first review the next day and their second at the weekend. Older topics get pulled forward one at a time, oldest first, so every study session contains roughly seventy per cent new material and thirty per cent revisited. Nothing is ever more than a few weeks from its last contact.

Starting intervals worth using

Scheduling applications track thousands of individual items and adjust each one's next interval based on how easily you recalled it. For a medical vocabulary of eight thousand terms, this is not a convenience but a necessity — no notebook survives that scale.
What the software does not do is make cards, and card quality determines everything downstream. A well-made deck of five hundred items beats a bloated three thousand, because the bloated one gets abandoned in week six under a review load nobody agreed to. The four ways it goes wrong
The first failure is volume. People add cards enthusiastically for three weeks and then face ninety minutes of daily reviews they cannot sustain. The load compounds silently, because every card added today creates obligations for the next two years. Adding fewer, better cards is almost always the correct adjustment.
The second is shape. Spaced repetition handles discrete recallable items superbly and conceptual understanding poorly. A card asking 'what is the Krebs cycle?' cannot be answered in a way the system can grade, and a hundred such cards produce a strong feeling of study with little understanding. Break concepts into specific questions, and use writing or explanation for the parts that resist that treatment.
The third is passive grading — reading the front, thinking 'yes, I know that', flipping, and marking it correct. Nothing was retrieved. The answer must be produced, ideally out loud or on paper, before the card turns over.
The fourth is the backlog, which is where most abandonment happens. Miss ten days, return to eleven hundred due cards, and quit. The recovery is to cap daily reviews at a number you will actually do, work the oldest first, and accept that some material has to be relearned. A schedule you keep at half intensity beats a perfect one you stop.
Where it belongs in a week
Spacing is a delivery schedule, not a study method in itself. What you do inside each review still has to be retrieval, which is why the two ideas are usually taught together and why a spaced schedule built around rereading gains you very little.
Put reviews early in the day if you can, at a fixed time, and keep them short enough that skipping feels harder than doing them. Twelve minutes before breakfast, every day, will outperform a heroic Sunday session by a wide margin — and unlike the heroic session, it survives a bad week.
